Naturalization petition files, 1824-1906.

These files include petitions to be admitted to citizenship, declarations of intention to become citizens (certified copies), reports of special commissioners, affidavits of witnesses and petitioners, and court orders admitting petitioners. There is less information in the earlier records than in the later ones. The earlier records usually include for each petitioner the name and former nationality of the petitioner, the name of the witness in the matter of the petition, and an oath of allegiance to the United States. The latest records usually indicate for each petitioner the name, address, former nationality, age, port and approximate date of arrival, and occupation of the petitioner, the name and address, former nationality, age, port and approximate date of arrival, and occupation of the petitioner, the name and address of the witness, and include an oath of allegiance and order of the court admitting the petitioner to citizenship.
